An eco-friendly Christmas gift wrap workshop with Jane Means opened my eyes to some easy and spectacular ways to wrap gifts, but also to sustainable materials that can be incorporated into the finished look…
Professional gift wrapper Jane’s ethos is to make present opening even more exciting and memorable by wrapping parcels in unique and individual ways.
By incorporating some of the sustainable tips below, you can not only elevate the look of your gift, but also use up some of the craft materials and everyday items you already have at home. Remember to forage in nature too, picking up twigs, pine cones, laurel and flower sprigs from your own garden or nature walks.

12 eco-friendly Christmas gift wrapping ideas:
1. Utilise corrugated cardboard as an additional layer around gifts wrapped in brown paper. Embellish with some twigs tied with ribbon, it will be really eye-catching.
2. Used brown paper or metallic paper that is already creased can still be reused. Scrunch it in to a tight ball and you will get an eye catching crinkle effect.
3. Give gifts the natural twist by tying in twigs and cones picked up on country walks.
4. Keep old cracker gifts as these often make great decorations on the outside of a gift.
5. Small remnants of ribbon can be re-used and layered to give really attractive results.
6. Pre made bows from crackers can easily be added to gifts. Just tie them in with a neutral coloured string or twine.
7. Wallpaper remnants make great gift bags and gift envelopes.
8. Try and avoid foil, glitter or plastic coated gift wrap which can’t be recycled. Opt for natural papers printed with vegetable ink.
9. Boxes can be wrapped without using any tape. Go for a slightly thicker paper and crease it as you go along. Finish with string or ribbon which will keep the paper tight around the gift.
10. Make your own paper shred by popping old wrapping through a shredder (remove the sticky tape). It makes a great filler for hampers. Add some of your sprigs from nature to further enhance the look.
11. Make your own personalised paper by scrawling messages on to brown paper with a sharpie pen. Your friends and family will love it.
12. Keep paper tablecloths and napkins from parties. They make great wrapping – and it’s sustainable to re-use, too.
