The Best New TV Shows To Watch: January 2025

There are so many exciting UK television series’ hitting our screens this month! Get through the January slump with some of the best new TV shows everyone’s talking about. 

Missing You 

Detective Kat Donovan, an NYPD detective, matches on a dating app with ex fiancé, Josh, who randomly ghosted her 11 years ago. When Josh accepts only to then abruptly delete it, Kat’s vulnerabilities resurface and begin to affect her work. Still haunted by her father’s murder alongside Josh’s second disappearing act, when she starts opening old wounds and digging around for answers she learns that some secrets are best left in the past.

Playing Nice 

 Two couples discover every new parent’s worst nightmare has come true – their toddlers were switched at birth. As this dark story unfolds across the scenic Cornish landscape, viewers are left with a mixed bag of feelings. The couples ultimately clash over the children’s welfare. Pete (James Norton) and Maddie (Niamh Algar) spiral into a custody dispute as questions mount about Miles (James McArdle) and Lucy’s (Jessica Brown Findlay) intentions.

Prime Target 

Maths genius and Cambridge University postgraduate, Edward Brooks, threatens data security with his research into prime numbers. His obsession with uncovering a pattern in prime numbers that would allow him to access every computer in the world makes him a “prime target” for the NSA. Edward quickly figures out that he’s being followed by NSA agent Taylah Sanders. Despite being tasked with watching and reporting his progress to higher ups, Taylah questions her superiors’ intentions. Suddenly the young student and Taylah find themselves dragged into a whole other other world where together they uncover a bigger conspiracy revolving around Edward.

Vera: Season 14 

Sadly, it’s time to wave goodbye to Vera as the show enters its final season! DCI Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) is back to solve some more murders. In episode one, she is called to investigate the washed up body of a young man on the banks of the Tyne, a blow to the head quickly rules out accidental drowning. Later identified as Zac Martin – recently been released from prison after serving time for grievous bodily harm – it becomes clear this is a man who had target on his back… but by who?

Call The Midwife: Season 14 

In episode one of the latest season, the Nonnatus team assist a pregnant teenager whose parents claim immaculate conception. Such interference in the eyes of religion results in protests that disrupt their work. Nancy’s romantic relationship will also progress this season as the team continues to navigate the challenges of midwifery.
