This Year’s Surprising Bake Off Winner Divides Viewers!
Matty Edgell, a PE teacher from Peterborough, has been crowned this year’s Bake Off winner after being the ‘underdog’ of the season and surprising viewers with his win
Last night, the 2023 Bake Off winner was announced on the show’s 14th season finale. But for many long-time fans of the show, the winner was unexpected as well as notably underbaked!
Matty competed alongside other finalists, Josh and Dan for the title. In the end, Matty won over Paul and Prue with his Showstopper, following another strong performance in the Signature challenge. However, a lot of people were surprised considering the sponges of Matty’s showstopper cake were actually called out for being underdone.
After hearing about his win, Matty said: “There have been so many ups and so many downs. So many times when I had to be pulled through by the people closest to me. I cannot imagine I have been that much fun to live within the last 10 weeks. I am happy for them as much as I am for me. It still doesn’t feel real.”
The 28-year-old humbly applied for the show after friends and family urged him to consider it. A notable standout moment for the winner was when he received the prestigious handshake from Paul Hollywood for his “delicious” sausage rolls.
Despite the judge’s final call, many viewers expected 27-year-old Josh to win. The young chemist was a favourite among viewers throughout the series and many believe his final performance was the best.
Regardless, Josh was a good sport and had nothing but congratulations for his fellow baker. The post-doctoral research associate from Leicestershire, said: “I am so chuffed for Matty – when it always comes to the cake he has been fantastic, he is such a worthy winner, and a lovely chap as well.”
